Client: The Philadelphia Zoo
Location: Philadelphia, PA
Meliora Design provided full civil engineering services and developed innovated stormwater management strategies for the new Hamilton Family Children's Zoo at the Philadelphia Zoo. In addition to coordinating site utilities including sanitary sewage drainage for animal areas, gas lines, water lines, and geothermal well locations, Meliora developed a stormwater plan that includes rain gardens for water quality pre-treatment, subsurface aggregate infiltration beds, and underground cisterns that capture roof runoff for reuse in rest room facilities. The stormwater management system was designed to meet Philadelphia Water Department stormwater regulations, which required areas outside of the project area to be managed in lieu of animal areas that were not desired to drain into the infiltration beds. The new exhibit not only allows interaction between children and animals, but it features educational displays highlighting the environmental benefits of the water management at the site. The Hamilton Family Children's Zoo is seeking LEED certification.
